FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
QUARTERDECK ANNOUNCES QRAM, NEW MEMORY MANAGER,
AND UPGRADES TO TWO PRODUCTS
SANTA MONICA, Calif., August 21, 1989 -- Quarterdeck Office
Systems today announced the introduction of a new product, QRAM,
and upgrades to two existing products: QEMM-50/60 (Quarterdeck
Expanded Memory Manager-50/60), version 5.0, and QEMM-386
(Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager-386), version 5.0.
All three products being introduced include a new
interactive menu-driven utility, called Manifest, that provides
detailed information on how a PC's memory is being used.

QRAM
QRAM organizes and allocates memory resources for 8088/86-
based PCs and AT-style 286 PCs. QRAM gives XT-, and AT-class PCs
with EMS 4.0 or EEMS memory the capacity to load programs into
high memory. High memory is memory that is addressed between
640K and 1024K, previously unavailable to DOS.
By loading local area network drivers, TSRs and mouse
drivers into high memory, it is possible to maximize the amount
of DOS conventional memory available to applications. QRAM is
the only product available that adds load-high capability on top
of any EMS 4.0 or EEMS drivers.
QEMM
The ability to "load high" is also a new feature of QEMM-
50/60, version 5.0, the only available software product providing
this capability to PS/2 50/60 machines using standard expanded
memory boards.
Additions to QEMM-386, version 5.0, include several new
features for maximizing the use of high memory, such as the
ability to free up unused areas of ROM and optimally choose
regions of memory for loading resident programs. Other new
features include the ability to detect potential hardware
conflicts with adaptors on PS/2 machines, and the ability to
access up to 384K of additional reserved memory on certain
machines, including Compaq computers.
"With the introduction of QRAM and versions 5.0 of QEMM-
50/60 and QEMM-386, Quarterdeck now offers users of all types of
DOS-based PCs powerful tools for optimizing the use of their PC's
memory, particularly important for multitasking and networking
environments," said Therese Myers, president and cofounder of
Quarterdeck.
MANIFEST
The Manifest utility, a component of all three products, is
an everyday tool for examining memory and understanding how it is
used by programs, DOS, devices and other system components. With
that understanding, a user can optimize system functioning.
"Manifest is a memory reporting utility that will be of
special interest to network managers, customer service reps and
power users who require detailed information about the
configuration of their operating environments," continued Myers.
"It contains sophisticated reporting and analysis tools and gives
specific suggestions for better utilizing memory. The Manifest
utility will enable users to become experts in memory
management."
The products will ship in October. QRAM will cost $59.95.
QEMM-50/60, version 5.0 and QEMM-386, version 5.0 will each cost
$99.95. Anyone who purchases a QEMM product between August 21
and the release date for the new version, can purchase an
upgrade, with proof of purchase, for $20. QEMM-50/60 and QEMM-
386 users enrolled in Quarterdeck's Priority Support Program can
receive a version 5.0 upgrade for $20. Registered QEMM users can
receive an upgrade for $30.
QEMM-386, for 80386-based PCs, 80386-based IBM PS/2s, and
PCs with 80386 add-in boards, is a high performance, expanded
memory manager that allows users to convert their PC's extended
memory into expanded memory, enabling users to break the 640K
barrier. QEMM-50/60, for 80286-based IBM PS/2 PCs, takes
advantage of hardware capabilities of the IBM PS/2 80286 Memory
Expansion Option, Expanded Memory Adaptor/A or compatible memory
boards to transform extended memory into expanded memory.
Therese Myers and Gary Pope founded Quarterdeck Office
Systems in 1981 to develop and publish software utilities that
provide users and managers with tools for integrating divergent
industry software standards. The company develops multitasking,
windowing and memory management software designed to bring cost
effective solutions to business and professional PC users. The
company has shipped over a million copies of its flagship
product, DESQview.
